The Tampa Edition is a luxurious new addition to the Gulf Coast hotel scene.

FloridaThere is no shortage of hotels on the Gulf Coast where you can earn and redeem points. You’ll find everything from the cheap and cheerful Hilton Garden Inn hotels to the more sophisticated options of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. However, a wide range of accommodation options in Tampa didn’t have any truly outstanding properties before…until now.

In September 2022, the city’s hotel scene changed when Marriott opened a Tampa branch of its luxury label Edition (created in collaboration with renowned hotelier Jan Schrager). Here’s what you need to know about the new Tampa Edition hotel.

The centerpiece of Tampa’s $3.5 billion Water Street renovation, The Tampa Edition has a lush lobby filled with hundreds of mature houseplants, and the Mediterranean-style rooftop pool deck is a place to see while enjoying the South Sun. Florida.

Why You’ll Love The Tampa Edition

This isn’t a run-down corporate hotel – lavish touches like live plants and faux fur give the hotel plenty of texture, plenty of personality and a distinctly organic aesthetic.

Jungle oasis lobby

Prepare to gasp as you enter the truly quirky hotel lobby, where hundreds of potted plants create a green haven for visitors seeking refuge from Florida’s heat and humidity.

In fact, there are so many plants here that it can be hard to find the reception desks at first glance, as giant Kentian palms and banana leaf trees obscure them from the entrance. It’s a little disorienting at first, but it’s a smart way to create separate zones in a huge space.

While armchairs with shaggy faux-fur covers may seem strange for a hotel in such a warm climate, well-calibrated air conditioning keeps guests cool.

Cool Scandic design touches

The 172 spacious rooms, including 30 suites, showcase the Edition Hotel’s signature combination of bright whites and dark neutrals.

Light and airy design options abound, from white linens and an upholstered chair to Edition’s signature faux fur throw, all of which reflect sunlight flooding the floor-to-ceiling windows. Black accents (think: a series of abstract black photographs, a black and white marble table, and a white rug with black stripes) add definition and contrast to the space.

Everything seems unassuming and harmonious, with the gold cabinetry and pull-out handles on the wardrobe and minibar echoing the bathroom fixtures and adding a high-quality finish to the entire room.

Also in the bathroom, guests will find full-size bottles of signature Le Labo by Edition toiletries, frosted doors to the toilet and a shower with two gold-plated hand and manual nozzles. However, double the vanity would have been well deserved at this price point.

Lots of restaurants and bars

An impressive eight restaurants and bars offer everything from take-away coffee at Market at Edition to a four-course, fixed-price menu from award-winning chef John Fraser at Vegetarian Restaurant Lilac. Shiny green tiles in the open kitchen, emerald upholstery and an abundance of potted plants emphasize the kitchen’s plant-based focus.

Night goers can enjoy the Punch Room, which the hotel claims is the first bar in North America dedicated to Caribbean punch. There is also an arts club that offers cabaret-style entertainment in a dark red setting for adults only.

Courteous and efficient bartenders prepare signature cocktails in the lobby bar, including a harissa margarita with mezcal and lime, in the common meeting room where friends and strangers mingle easily.

The Market’s breakfast menu is Mediterranean-inspired and includes items such as a generous helping of “eggs in purgatory” baked with capers, kalamata olives and rosemary focaccia chunks, complemented by Napolitana’s rich, spicy tomato sauce. Note, however, that, unfortunately, breakfast is not free in the Edition brand for Platinum Elite members Marriott Bonvoy program.

After breakfast, the Market offers tasty everyday dishes such as onion petals with Calabrian chili aioli and fillet carpaccio as an appetizer, as well as rich, spicy pork ragout pasta with whipped ricotta for the main course.

Room service also offers simple but delicious meals such as the Cuban French Fries Sandwich. The city of Tampa claims to be the home of this world-famous sliced meat and cheese snack, although Miami and Cuba may strongly disagree.

Rooftop Pool Sanctuary

The spacious rooftop pool on the ninth floor is also Mediterranean in both design and kitchen. Dozens of daybeds provide guests with places to relax by the pool under the bright sun or under the olive trees in partial shade and privacy.

There are also roped-off booths for large groups looking for bottled service, which must be packed before sunset on weekends when the DJ provides the soundtrack. No more need trip to miami for the Classic Party Edition.

Azure Restaurant by the pool offers classics such as Greek salad and succulent marinated souvlaki filet mignon kebab served on pita bread with fries and hummus.

Also on the ninth floor is a well-equipped gym with great natural light and views of the nearby city centre.

Why You Might Not Like The Tampa Edition

Given that this is by far the most expensive hotel in Tampa, the guest experience isn’t perfect.

Not ideal location

Although the Tampa Edition is located in the trendy and remodeled Water Street area, there are some disappointing shortcomings that are evident.

A gleaming, newly built tower right on the Garrison Canal may be where guests assume the Edition is located. Instead, that vantage point is occupied by the new JW Marriott, which has won the single best new location in downtown Tampa. Edition, on the other hand, is an inland block on Channelside Drive. Some of the superior entry-level rooms in the Edition offer water views, but the huge multi-use Amalie Arena at least partially blocks most views, as does the JW Marriott.

The huge Yard House bar and restaurant is currently being built right next door to cater to the sports and concertgoers who visit the Amalie Arena. Once built it will be a great place, but with a scheduled opening date of “summer 2023” it is still very much a construction site and construction noise can be easily heard from the Edition’s rooftop pool and outdoor restaurant.

Perplexing artificial flowers

Purple bougainvillea flowers cascade over the lobby doors at street level and hang over the pool decks, cabanas and bar. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that all the bougainvilleas in the publication are artificial, mixed with hundreds of real palm trees, ivy, trees and ferns.

Considering how much the hotel has invested in real flora, especially in the impressive lobby, and the abundance of sunlight, rain and natural light in this place, it is not clear why so many artificial flowers are installed in a luxury hotel.

Cool room rates

Tampa is not a cheap destination, and as it is the most luxurious accommodation option in the city, you can expect the price of an Edition room to be high. With basic rooms starting at around $600 a night and rising to over $1,000 a night during peak periods, staying here can be out of the budget for many travelers.

Marriott Bonvoy guests can expect to earn at least 70,000 Bonvoy Points per night here, although some nights cost six figures. That’s significantly more expensive, both in points and in cash, than the nearby (and also new) JW Marriott, which has a better location and prices that tend to stay below $500 a night.

Obsessive ephemera

Real estate is of great interest to local Tampa residents, but prices may exclude the possibility of living. The colorful lobby and sun-drenched pool deck are the perfect backdrops for impromptu Instagram photo shoots.

For hotel guests, this means a constant stream of people who come in from the street, take a long look around, pose for photos (and then retouch those photos many times to improve their poses), and eventually leave without paying for any hotel services. .

At first, people-watching can be more interesting than frustrating. However, the incessant stream of intruders pretending to be guests in the house for a gram will inevitably become tiresome for staff and customers alike.

Alternatives

Marriott Bonvoy supporters who might be put off by The Tampa Edition’s high room rates should consider nearby JW Marriott Tampa Water Street. This luxury hotel is also a new construction. It enjoys a prime waterfront location and includes the JW Spa with steam rooms, saunas, outdoor showers and a warm mineral pool.

If you’re looking for something cheaper and more fun, try The Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk. This affordable hotel combines reasonable rooms and waterfront views with a convenient downtown location across the street from the David Straza Jr. Performing Arts Center and close to the Tampa Convention Center.

Availability

The ground floor of The Tampa Edition is wheelchair accessible with flat surfaces and wide aisles despite potted plant clusters. The stairs here are more for dramatic effect than for mainstream transportation.

Despite the fact that the Market restaurant is a few steps down, there is also a well thought out ramp. The rooms and the rooftop pool, bar and restaurant are accessible for disabled guests via lifts.
